Recently members from NJSAR’s Mountain Rescue Unit were activated to assist the New York Department of Environmental Conservation’s Forest Rangers in a search for 71 year-old Fred Gillingham reported missing by friends and family on October 12th in Indian Lake New York. Members of the unit responded for two consecutive weeks demonstrating their dedication by making the four-hour drive north then slogging through some very difficult Lower Adirondack terrain searching for any clues that may aid in the subjects location. Tasked on what is called a “Type One” search, members spaced themselves apart approximately 25 yards and used compass and GPS navigation to carefully grid-search the extremely dense wilderness in hopes of finding clues. The community of Indian Lake welcomed searchers from all over New York and New Jersey and provided support, meals and lodging for those members responding a long way from home. At this time the NYSDEC has scaled back the search for Mr. Gillingham, as the only clue found to his disappearance was his locked car at a local trailhead popular with hikers and outdoorsman. NJSAR extends our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Fred Gillingham.
